Test and Validate Basic Push Implementation

After you finish implementation, contact registration, and push notification provisioning, test and validate your setup by sending your first push notification through Marketing Cloud Engagement.

Validate Device Registration and Opt-In Status 

To confirm that your device is registered and opted in, complete these steps.

  1. Review Test and Validate Registrations.
  2. Copy the device ID for later use.

Send a Push Notification 

Use the Marketing Cloud Engagement user interface to send a test push notification. Alternatively, you can create and send push notifications by using the REST API for Marketing Cloud Engagement.

To send a test push notification, complete these steps.

  1. In Marketing Cloud Engagement, go to Mobile Studio > MobilePush.
  2. Click Create Message.
  3. On the Create Message page, select the Outbound template.
  4. Define the properties of the message:
    • For Message Name, enter a message name.
    • For App, select the app you created during setup.
    • For Send Method, select Schedule.
    • For Push Method, select Alert.
  5. Click Next.
  6. For Audience Type, select Contact List.
  7. Click Create List.
  8. Click MobilePush Data and then select MobilePush Demographics.
  9. Drag the Device ID attribute to the canvas. MobilePush demographics page, with the Device ID attribute dragged onto the canvas. A device ID value is listed in the criteria field.
  10. In the Device ID attribute field, paste the device ID for your test device.
  11. Click Done.
  12. Click Save as Filter and name the contact list.
  13. Select the contact list, and then select Auto-refresh before send.
  14. Click Next.
  15. Create your test push notification by specifying the Title and Message.
  16. Click Next.
  17. For Delivery, select Immediately.
  18. Send the message.

To review the progress of your test push notification, go to the Sends tab in MobilePush.

Review Test Notification and Analytics 

After you successfully send a push notification to your test device, test that your implementation is configured to send back analytics.

  1. Open and interact with the test push notification on your device.
  2. Send the app to the background.
  3. On the Engagement Dashboard, go to Mobile Studio > MobilePush. Wait for about 5 minutes for the data to populate.
  4. Select or search the name of the message that you sent.
  5. Review analytics and message details.
